Go over the College poster project:

Script for asking teacher for interview:

Hi Ms/Mr. ______________. My name is ___________ and I’m part of the 7th grade intro to tech class. I would like to interview you about your college experience and will then create a personalized college poster for your door based on the interview. I was hoping that I could meet with you at the beginning of next week. Can we please set up a time?

Before I leave, may I also have the name of the college you attended?

Thank you very much.

Letter I sent the teachers. It also has a list of possible questions you may want to use.

Hi MWIS Staff,

As our school becomes more and more college and career ready, is it so helpful for our students to visualize life after high school. To accomplish this, we’re hoping that you can all be a part of our annual activity Teacher College Interviews and Posters. The intention is to get our students excited about college, start/continue doing college research, and create a poster for your door about your college experience to help create a college-going culture here at Maui High.

The 7th grade intro to tech students will be coming around in the next couple of weeks to set up an interview time with you. The interview itself should only take approximately 15 minutes depending on how much detail you want to give them in your responses.

Here is a list of possible questions the students might ask you.
1. What college did you attend?
2. Did you want to attend or did your parents influence you?
3. What made you choose this particular college?
4. How long did it take you to graduate college?
5. Were you the first in your family to go to college?
6. Did you like college better than high school? Why?
7. What was the surrounding area like? What did you do outside of college?
8. Did your college/university have a mascot? Slogan / motto?
9. How did you keep yourself on task?
10. How did you deal with stress?
11. What adversity/challenges did you face?
12. Did you work? How did you budget your money?
13. What was your college known for? (i.e., good football team, good law school, etc.)
14. What was the hardest thing about college?
15. Did college help you with your everyday life? How did it help you?
16. Why did you choose to become a teacher?
17. What courses did you take?
18. How did you determine your major? How many times did you change your major? If you could go back to college, would you take the same courses? Would you major in the same field?
19. Did you go directly into college from high school?
20. What was your college experience like?
21. In one word, describe your college experience.
22. Did you live in the dorms? An apartment? Who did you live with? What is it like to live with a stranger?
23. What were you involved with in college? (sports, clubs, Greek life, etc.)
24. How did freedom/independence affect your college experience?
25. Did you feel prepared when entering college? Were you prepared?
26. Did college give you better job opportunities?
27. What was your most memorable moment in college?
28. What kinds of study methods were most effective for you?
29. What was the most interesting thing you learned and still carry today?
30. What foods consisted of your college diet?
31. What was the craziest thing you did in college?
32. If you needed help in college, what resources were provided/did you utilize?
33. Describe your favorite professor.
34. How often did you go home?
35. Did you get homesick? If so, how did you cope with it?

One of the main reasons we are doing this activity is to give our students as much exposure to adults as possible. Many of them will be nervous…please help them feel comfortable, but also feel free to give them suggestions on how to interact with adults, conduct an interview, shake hands, eye contact, etc.

Based on these interviews, the students will create a COLLEGE POSTER for your classroom door. Our goal is to get these to you by the end of 1st quarter.

THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance for participating in this program!

Last of all, here is the Rubric for the poster and the presentation.
